Missouri Homestead : One Year on Our Farm : March
“March is a tomboy with tousled hair, a mischievous smile, mud on her shoes, and a laugh in her voice.” ― Hal Borland
March on our homestead is when we swing into high gear after the relative slow pace of winter. Things are being planted, chickens are laying again, we have to get ready for farmers market, and all the animals still need cared for...
In this twelve month series you'll get a front row seat to our raw and real homestead life. You'll see just what it takes to keep our farm running while working our full time jobs.
Welcome to One Year on Our Farm!
After 20 years of successful careers in the Los Angeles area we moved to rural Missouri and are taking steps to become more self-sustaining on our homestead. I break down all the farmy things into small manageable steps so you can start homesteading wherever you are.
We homestead on 2.5 acres in the Missouri Ozarks, and our garden hardiness zone is 6B.
Our weekly videos break down farming and gardening into small manageable steps so you can make the transition towards self sufficiency and food sustainability without being overwhelmed!
I garden in the Missouri Ozarks and am in hardiness zone 6B.

      Hi Kim! Welcome. I’ve not got any new videos, but there’s a lot for you to browse through. I like your gardening skills. This year I only planted berries. And I promised myself I would only buy plants if I could go home and plant them the same day. I’ve had problems before of buying plants then they did because I never plant them.

    We have a colony of bunnies where the girls and boys are sperated. Bunnies dig about 12 inches underground and that helps give them some cooler living space. It is 50° underground year round. They have a whole tunnel system and it keeps them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Thank you for the video and good luck with the bunny housing 😊

      It is much harder when they are small. You may not be applying enough pressure around that area to push it up enough where you can see it. I mean, be gentle, but you do kind of have to push the skin back pretty far and it really just takes a lot of practice. Hang in there. You’ll get it.

    Informative, but you're definitely pushing an agenda, claiming that frozen farmer meat is somehow better than store bought locker aged never-frozen USDA graded meat.

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm Місяць тому

      Well, I’m coming in with the assumption that someone watching this is already considering buying half a beef. To store that much meat it would have to be frozen, or you’d have to be feeding a couple hundred people at a time. 😂 But more to your point I do think it’s better to buy local when you can and support local business. There is something satisfying about looking in the eyes of and shaking the hand of the person who grew, raised, or made the product you are buying. It’s one of the things I love about shopping at the farmers market. I do think that grass raised meat tastes better and is better for you than feed lot meat. It’s also a better value over time and per pound to buy half a beef. My buyers are getting every cut of meat, including steaks, filets, ribs, tritip, etc. for around $5 a pound after paying me and the butcher. You can’t get grass feed beef for that price in store, whether fresh or frozen. Store prices have gone up so much in the last five years, and I haven’t raised my prices yet. my cattle eat the grasses grown on our farm, my cost to raise them hasn’t gone up much and I’m able to keep prices down. It’s also less carbon emissions for my truck to haul a few head of cattle to the butcher and for the customer to pick it up. They’re not being transported by big rig across great distances either before or after processing. Lastly, one of the butchers I use IS a USDA inspected facility. But they also do butchering without the USDA stamp, which saves my buyer money. Same place, same process, just costs less. So, yeah, I think it’s better. Plus I made the video from the POV of a small farmer. So OF COURSE I have an agenda. I would love for everyone to have closer ties to their food and land. That’s one of the core values of our farm. But I also hope this video was educational about the process of buying from a local producer, because I know first hand how confusing it can be.

      @@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm I was afraid you would say that lol. What would you recommend as a feeding method for a colony? It’s hard to do daily feeding as far as hay/pellets/vegetables goes especially with a large number. It feels like managing rabbits are the same as chickens or are they sensitive to their diet?

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm 3 місяці тому

      I’ve never raised in a colony, I use these tractors. My rabbits get moved to fresh grass every day, and when I have multiple rabbits in one tractor they have free access to rabbit feed with about 5% rolled oats and 5% black oil sunflower seeds mixed in, in a chicken feeder. If I have a rabbit by itself they get 1/2 cup of the feed mix per day, and a pregnant doe gets 1 cup a day. I also give them veggie scraps (raw, not cooked) and fresh veg from the garden, but if you do this start small, like 5% of their diet or less until they get used to veggies. (Imagine eating only bread and cereal then all of a sudden having big salads every day. It could really mess with your gut!)

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm 3 місяці тому

      Oh! And in the winter I give them tons of hay because the lack of garden produce. As far as not feeding them daily, you could go with a big chicken water and feeder if the weather is nice, but I like to visually inspect all of my animals daily even if their food is full.

    • @jasonp364
      @jasonp364 3 місяці тому

      @@LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm I feed mine equal amounts of hay, pellets and fresh produce and let them decide what amounts they eat of which when the weather is still cool so they can stay warm. As far as a waterer goes. What do you use to handle the freezing? I’ve seen heated bowls, heating pads for buckets. I was thinking of a submersible aquarium heater inside a 5 gallon bucket with brass nipples?

    I see a lot of UA-camrs writing out sowing lists into calendars and I’m not actually sure why when they have an existing list like the one from Clyde they can directly refer to that never changes. The most that’s needed is a note in the calendar to ‘start sowing’ surely?

    • @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm
      @LorellaPlanBeeOrchardandFarm 3 місяці тому

      Well, I do it because I prefer to see it laid out chronologically rather than alphabetically which is how seed starting most planners are organized. I plant a greater variety of things than what Clyde lists, and the type on Clyde’s is small and hard for me to read. :) Having it in the calendar helps me see exactly and only what I need to do today.

    A suggestion to avoid walking out the hoses! Use an air compressor to simply 'blow' the water out of the hose from one end. It's worked well for me in the past. As for the 4 Seasons, though excited @ moving, I'm not looking forward to that 'cold' [moving to my 5 acres in Missouri].

I’m in iowa and I am not sure if I heard you right about how much you sold your 1/4 cow you said about $5-600 now is that including the butcher? I just paid 303 for butcher and 710 to my farmer for also 1/4 cow. I’ll always go to farmers I lived on farm for about 4 years and my son is in FFA. So I love it.

We only put aside 7 steers yearly for our friends and family but I deal with the customers, which most have been with us for over 20 years. I’ve had “newbies” that didn’t understand the process and refused to pay what we agreed on for the hanging weight because they felt we screwed them. They don’t realize that they are already paying for waste every day at the store on most of their food items.

      Aging the beef has two purposes. One is that the flavor intensifies. The other (and to me more important) is that the muscle fibers begin to break down and so your meat is more tender.
